The 4 Pillars of a Good Website

I’m always going on about the 4 pillars of a great website so I thought why not make  a pretty little graphic about it!? If you build a house without walls it will fall down. Same with a website. So here are the 4 pillars to keep the roof on your website….

DESIGN

Your site does need to have a clean, clear, tidy, good first impression look, and it is important, HOWEVER, so many people get stuck on things like choosing a colour or a tiny little pixel being out here or there. When designing your site I recommend doodling! grab a pen and paper and do a rough layout and focus more on your call to action and what you want people to do when they are on the page, not if this blue matches this purple. Its a sales tool not an interior decoration showroom. Video is AWESOME! by the way – it makes things personal and brings your site alive and more “real”.

PROGRAMMING

This is the geek stuff that freaks everyone out. It’s not as hard as everyone makes it these days, BUT if it does scare you get a professional to do it. It’s super important that things like stats and opt in forms are actually working and capturing your potential clients. Design without functionality is useless.

CONTENT

Content is king! as always! the best looking and best functioning site is nothing without strong call to action well written content. Some say people don’t read text but if the topic is something they need, something to cure a pain, help them on a current issue then they WILL read it. Trust me. I hate reading but if it’s of interest and I’m looking to buy then hell yeah I’m guna read it! If you choose video then what you say in the video is considered content too so keep that in mind.

MARKETING

A website without marketing is like a shop in a desert. No one will know you’re there. Or if they do get to your site and none of the top 3 things, (design, programming, content), were done with marketing in mind, then its a Ferrari without wheels! Ask yourself what you want out of your website before you even start. Think of a call to action (what you want them to do when they get to your site) and keep that end goal in  mind through the entire process.
